Stone Objects for Contemporary Interiors

Matera presents a new collection of collectible stone objects created in collaboration with internationally acclaimed designers and artists. For its debut collection, the brand invited leading creatives including Ronan Bouroullec, Joep van Lieshout, Stefan Scholten, Job Smeets, Clara von Zweigbergk, Teruhiro Yanagihara, Julie Richoz, Richard Hutten, Maho Motoyama and Bernard Heesen to explore the expressive and sculptural potential of natural stone.

Matera creates collectible design objects that enrich contemporary interiors with character, depth, and meaning. Carefully crafted from marble and other natural stones, each piece blends traditional craftsmanship with a refined creative vision. Bridging the worlds of art and design, the collection brings presence and permanence to a space.

Every object is signed and numbered and produced in limited, seasonal editions. Stones are responsibly sourced from select quarries and precisely crafted in a dedicated workshop, combining refined hand-finishing with advanced machining techniques and a deep respect for the material’s inherent qualities.

A Dialogue in Stone

At the heart of Matera lies a profound understanding of stone as a living material. No two pieces are ever the same; each surface carries its own veining, tone and color. A distinctive palette of marbles and natural stones defines the collection, expressing timeless beauty through contemporary form.

Rooted in the Italian design ethos of simplicity, quality, and innovation, Matera continuously collaborates with creatives from art, architecture, and design to expand an evolving material and color language. The invited designers were asked to conceive an object with a maximum size of 55 cm, free from functional constraints, allowing each work to clearly express the identity of its creator. Matera ships worldwide, offering collectible objects that unite material innovation, craftsmanship, and sculptural presence.

Founded in 2025 by husband-and-wife duo Manuela Rotta and Stefan Scholten, Matera merges Italian heritage with Dutch clarity and precision. Stefan Scholten, a graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven, is recognized for his reductionist design language and refined use of color through Studio Stefan Scholten in Amsterdam. Manuela Rotta, founder of Stone Made Italy, is an Italian entrepreneur specializing in natural stone, combining international quarry expertise with a deep respect for craftsmanship and material integrity.
